My name is Sunaryo, born from a pair of shellfish seekers in the Cikalong area, East Jakarta. You could say that I am very lucky to be able to study at SD 34 Cikalong where many of my friends have no education.

Indeed, in this village environment many children do not go to school even for basic education. So I was one of the privileged children because from a young age I was able to read and write.

Every time I came home from school when I was in elementary school, I always helped my father clean the boat or lift the shells. This is a daily routine so that the kitchen in my house can continue to emit smoke.

After six years of primary education I didn’t really want to continue. My intention is to become a fisherman like my father looking for income for the prosperity of the family.

But my father himself insisted that my education be continued until high school. Sure enough, I continued my education at SMP 3 Harapan Putra, which is not too far from the village.

Not many children go to school there because the dropout rate is quite high. So that in one class there are only fifteen at most twenty children who go to school.

This is indeed a portrait that is quite sad where many children prefer to work, including myself. Because life in this village is very sad if you don’t work.

Every time I come home from school I always help my father go to sea to look for shells and fish. In certain seasons the number of shellfish is so small that we have to sail to the middle of the ocean.

If the weather supports it, it doesn’t matter even though you have to sail far enough, but sometimes the predictions are wrong. Braving a storm in the middle of the ocean is now commonplace once again for the sake of the family.

Namaku sunaryo lahir dari sepasang pencari kerang di daerah cikalong jakarta timur. Bisa dibilang bahwa diri ini sangat beruntung karena bisa sekolah di SD 34 CIkalong di mana banyak temanku tidak mengenyam pendidikan.

Memang di lingkungan kampung ini banyak anak tidak sekolah bahkan untuk pendidikan dasar. Jadi aku termasuk salah satu anak yang diistimewakan karena dari kecil sudah bisa membaca menulis.

Setiap pulang sekolah waktu SD selalu membantu ayah membersihkan kapal atau mengangkat kerang. Ini adalah sebuah rutinitas setiap hari agar dapur di rumahku dapat terus mengeluarkan asap.

Setelah enam tahun menempuh pendidikan dasar aku sebenarnya tidak ingin meneruskan. Niatku adalah ingin menjadi nelayan seperti ayah mencari penghasilan untuk kemakmuran keluarga.

Namun ayahku sendiri mendesak agar pendidikanku diteruskan sampai bangku SMA. Benar saja aku melanjutkan sekolahku di SMP 3 Harapan Putra yang lokasinya tidak terlalu jauh dari perkampungan.

Tidak banyak anak yang sekolah disitu karena memang tingkat putus sekolah cukup tinggi. Sehingga dalam satu kelas hanya ada lima belas paling banyak dua puluh anak saja yang sekolah.

Ini memang sebuah potret yang cukup miris dimana banyak anak lebih memilih bekerja termasuk aku sendiri. Karena kehidupan di kampung ini memang sangat mengenaskan apabila tidak bekerja.

Setiap pulang sekolah aku selalu membantu ayah melaut untuk mencari kerang dan ikan. Pada musim tertentu jumlah kerang sangat sedikit sehingga kami harus berlayar sampai ke tengah samudera.

Jika cuaca mendukung tidak masalah meskipun harus berlayar cukup jauh, namun sesekali prediksi memang meleset. Menerjang badai di tengah samudera sekarang menjadi hal biasa sekali lagi demi keluarga.
