2. A Meaningful Eid Morning
After celebrating Eid with my family for over a decade, it feels like 2026 is a completely different experience. Perhaps it’s because I’m now in high school, so I’m no longer as excited about getting THR (I mean, who’s going to give me money anyway?).
Interestingly, I’ve actually discovered the true meaning of this special day.
After a full month of practicing self-restraint—trying to get to school on time, spending my free time reciting the Quran instead of scrolling through my phone, avoiding pointless talk, and of course, giving more to charity, I feel like my heart is full as Ramadan comes to a close.
Just as I was beginning to soak in that beautiful feeling, Syawal arrived to mark the end of the month. While others are overjoyed to welcome Eid in their new clothes, I find myself reflecting more. I wonder if I will be granted the chance to meet Ramadan again next year, so I can continue to become a better version of myself.
On Eid morning, I put on my best clothes and gathered with my father, mother, grandparents, and all my nieces and nephews. My mother had prepared rendang and opor ayam, the must-have dishes for the holiday. We enjoyed every bite together, feeling deeply grateful for our health, especially knowing that many others aren’t as fortunate to have it.

3. The Long Journey Home
Every year, as someone studying away from home, I travel back to my hometown to celebrate Eid. This moment feels incredibly special because, in order to make it back, I have to save up my allowance just to afford the ticket.
Currently, I’m living in Yogyakarta for my studies and will soon be heading to Padang, my birthplace. Don’t imagine me taking a plane and arriving in just an hour or two. I choose to take the bus to save money, even though the trip takes up to two days. It’s a bit sad having to trade my time, time I could have spent catching up with my nieces, nephews, and relatives, just to save some cash. But that’s okay. Someday, once I’m working, I’ll be able to fly home easily.
The trip from Jogja to Merak Port takes about 17 hours due to the heavy traffic, followed by a long 1.5-day journey from Bakauheni to Padang on the Trans-Sumatra bus. The moment I arrived at the terminal and saw my Uda (older brother) waving at me, all my exhaustion instantly vanished. The long journey home to welcome Eid al-Fitr was finally worth it.
