Indonesia Earthquake: Thousands Affected
Jakarta, May 1, 2024 – A powerful earthquake struck the island of Java, Indonesia, early this morning, causing significant damage and affecting thousands of residents. The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale, hit at 3:45 AM local time. The epicenter was located 150 kilometers southwest of Jakarta.
The quake caused buildings to collapse and triggered landslides in several areas. The Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) reported that at least 50 people have been confirmed dead, and hundreds are injured. Many residents have been evacuated to temporary shelters as aftershocks continue to shake the region.
Rescue teams are working tirelessly to search for survivors trapped under the rubble. The government has declared a state of emergency and is coordinating with international aid organizations to provide relief to the affected communities.
